Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin rejoiced in the victory of Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar in yesterday’s Kemaman by-election and called it a clear sign that Malay voters rejected the Pakatan Harapan-BN collaboration.
In a statement today, the Pagoh MP said the success of obtaining a 37,220-vote majority, which is an increase of almost 10,000 votes compared to the 15th general election results, is a clear sign of the people’s growing support for PAS in particular, and PN in general.
“At the same time, the result of the Kemaman by-election also confirmed the declining popularity of the Harapan-BN government.
“The people, especially the Malays, reject the cooperation between these two parties,” said the ex-prime minister.
He cited as evidence the fact that the votes obtained by the BN candidate in this by-election were far lower than the votes received during GE15, although it should be noted that the voter turnout of 93,289 was 18.5 percent lower than the GE15 turnout of 114,553.
Yesterday, PAS held on to Kemaman as Samsuri garnered 64,998 votes, defeating BN’s Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor who obtained 27,778 votes.
“This is a sign that BN supporters themselves have switched to supporting PAS.
“The result of the Kemaman by-election is a string of BN voters’ rejection of the party’s cooperation with Harapan as can be observed in all previous by-elections.
“This is a constant warning from voters to BN, especially Umno, to reassess their cooperation with Harapan,” said Muhyiddin, whose own party Bersatu has seen five MPs switch their support to the government of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in recent weeks.
The by-election was called after the GE15 victory of PAS’ Che Alias Hamid was annulled following a petition that there were elements of inducement of voters during campaigning. - Mkini
