PM: Christmas Day can be catalyst for love, compassion among all

Malaysians must remain united so that the country can continue developing its economy and investment while eradicating poverty, said Anwar Ibrahim.

In a Facebook posting, the prime minister said the Christmas Day celebration this year can serve as a momentum to show love, kindness, understanding and compassion among each other.

It’s also an opportunity to spread goodwill within various communities, regardless of race, religion or background, he added.

“Wishing a Happy Christmas Day celebration to all Christians in the country. It is an auspicious day for the Christian community to celebrate Christmas with their loved ones, families, friends and relatives every year.

“May this year’s Christmas celebration bring happiness, peace, harmony, prosperity and unity among all Malaysians,” he said in his 2023 Christmas Day greetings.

Christmas is celebrated on Dec 25 by the Christian community around the world every year.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah also extended Christmas greetings to all Christians.

Their Majesties conveyed their wishes through a post shared on the Istana Negara Facebook yesterday.

“May this celebration bring peace, prosperity, happiness and well-being to all members of the Christian community,” it said.

Other leaders also took to social media with their Christmas messages.

Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof said that every festival celebrated by our multicultural society can serve as the cornerstone of the unity that leads to harmony between races and the prosperity of Malaysia and its people.

He hopes this year’s Christmas celebrations will form the foundation for the country to strengthen unity and harmony.

“Let this festive season catalyse reinforcing racial unity and harmony, celebrating our diverse backgrounds through the values of tolerance and mutual respect.

“May the unity and well-being we cherish endure, ensuring a legacy for future generations. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2024!” he posted on Facebook yesterday.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa also conveyed her Christmas Day greetings to all Christians, advising all Malaysians to prioritise togetherness and unity in building a brighter future for the country.

“We need to value every uniqueness and tradition without abandoning the value of unity that has been with us all this while. Through mutual respect and cooperation, we can build a more united and prosperous society.

“May the years to come bring with them peace, love and understanding between each other,” she posted on X.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Nancy Shukri delivered her Christmas Day greetings via a video uploaded on X, inviting Malaysians to be with their family and friends to enjoy the festivities together.

“I also wish everyone a Happy New Year 2024. With this new year, let’s all pray that Malaysia will be a peaceful, united country,” she added.
