Umno supreme council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi has denied Bersatu’s claim that the decision to place Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan in the Foreign Ministry was aimed at weakening the Umno leader.
On the other hand, Puad said that it was Bersatu who wanted to weaken and kill Umno when it led the Perikatan Nasional government.
He reminded Tasek Gelugur MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan - who made the allegation - that Mohamad during the PN administration, the Umno number two was not given any role in the administration led by Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin.
“Wan Saiful made the accusation that Mat Hasan (Mohamad Hasan) was sidelined when he was appointed foreign minister.
“He forgot that during Muhyiddin’s time as prime minister that Mat Hasan was not given any cabinet position. It was an effort to weaken Umno,” said Puad.
Commenting further, Puad said there was no question of the position of foreign minister separating Mohamad from the grassroots, as even Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was appointed to the post and remained popular within the party until he eventually became prime minister.
“Pak Lah (Abdullah) was once foreign minister. He remains popular. Wan Saiful may have forgotten that Muhyiddin appointed Abdul Hadi Awang as an adviser to the Middle East. What is the problem?
“During the cabinet reshuffle this time, Umno got another minister. Almost all of Umno’s main leaders were appointed ministers.
“During Muhyiddin’s time, he appointed Umno ministers without discussion and disrespected Umno’s hierarchy. That was an attempt to divide Umno,” he told Malaysiakini.
According to Wan Saiful, the new position requires Mohamad to be abroad more often, thus allowing Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to strengthen his position.
“So, this is also what Anwar did to help Zahid.
“In order to block Mohamad's progress, Anwar sent him to the Foreign Ministry, which is an important ministry for the country but not strategic (locally) because he will have to be abroad,” claimed Wan Saiful. - Mkini
