PETALING JAYA: Several roads in Penang will be closed for the annual Chingay procession on Saturday and on Dec 30.

They will be held at two locations in Seberang Perai and on the island, Bernama reported.

State tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the roads will be closed for several hours until the event ends.

In Seberang Perai, the procession will be held on Dec 23. It will start from the Seberang Perai City Council’s (MBSP) field in Bagan Luar near Butterworth to the Tow Boo Kong Temple. It will start from 7pm and end around 11.30pm.

The procession will pass through Jalan Bagan Luar, Jalan Telaga Air and Jalan Raja Uda.

Wong said the Chingay procession on the island will be held on Dec 30, from 7pm to 11pm. It will start from Padang Brown and end at Lebuh Light.

The roads to be closed are Jalan Johor, Jalan Penang, Jalan Burma, Jalan Transfer, Jalan Sri Bahari, Jalan Chulia, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling and Lebuh Light.

Apart from the Chingay procession, lion and dragon dances, Malay and Indian cultural performances will be held to celebrate the diversity of races in the state.

A fireworks display will also be held.

Wong said 33 teams will be taking part in the procession in Butterworth and 45 teams on the island.

“The procession is not only a cultural celebration but can bring the people together as a community.

“I also hope that one day, the event will be recognised as an intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco),” he said. - FMT
