TAWAU: A businesswoman here claimed she had fallen victim to a gold investment scheme involving more than RM5 million, including investments from 300 other investors.
Zerina Collection owner Liana Friska Ramle said she invested a total of RM3.17 million, while the 300 investors invested RM2.18 million.
She said all the investments were then handed over to a woman who claimed to be a representative of a gold investment company.
She said the representative promised substantial returns to all investors, ranging from 5% to 15% within 10 days or RM25 for every gramme of gold invested.
Investors were promised that the capital would be returned gradually.
“In May, June and July, investors received profits, but none were received from August.
“Subsequently, we did not receive the capital repayment that was supposed to be made in October, November and December.
“A police report was lodged on Dec 14,” she told a press conference here today.
Lawyer Abdul Ghani Zelika, representing Liana Friska and several others, said a letter of demand was sent to the representative on Dec 11. They were currently in discussions to file a suit as they had not received any response.
MG Jewels business representative Ale Rahman Abdul Rauf said the company had also invested RM2.36 million in the gold investment scheme since May.
Tawau police chief Jasmin Hussin confirmed a report was lodged, adding that an investigation had been initiated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. - FMT
