Sarawak still needs 1,500 more teachers

 

Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the shortage of teachers had been discussed and recommendations made to all concerned through the Malaysia Agreement 1963 Committee.

PETALING JAYA: The placement of 1,108 new teachers in Sarawak is a good start but would not resolve the overall issue of a shortage of teachers in the state.

State education, innovation and talent development minister Roland Sagah Wee Inn told Bernama in Kuching that Sarawak still requires at least 1,500 more teachers in various disciplines to fill vacant posts.

This was based on engagements with the state education department, Education Services Commission (SPP) and the education ministry.

“As far as the Sarawak government is concerned, this issue has been prominently discussed and recommendations made to all concerned through the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Committee.

“Among them is the delegation of power to recruit new teachers from SPP to the education ministry.”

Roland hoped swift action would be taken to ease the shortage of teachers as it affects the education of students.

Earlier today, the state education department said it had received 1,108 new teachers, consisting of graduates from public and private universities.

Of this number, 422 teachers will be placed in primary schools and the remaining 686 teachers in secondary schools, effective Dec 28. - FMT
