PETALING JAYA: An MCA leader has called for infighting among Barisan Nasional component parties to stop, citing the need to focus on restoring the coalition’s former glory.
MCA Youth information chief Neow Choo Seong said pointing fingers and attacking partners in the coalition offered no benefit to BN.
“Let us forgive one another, discard the impure and retain the pure. There’s no need to find out who started what or who retaliated, let what has happened be history and a lesson for us all,” he said in a statement.
“Let’s collectively rectify our shortcomings and weaknesses. In this challenging political environment, we all need to be professional and responsible.”
MCA and Umno have been involved in numerous public spats lately, starting with MCA vice-president Tan Teik Cheng’s call for BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to acknowledge the coalition’s waning Malay support.
This came after Zahid claimed that BN’s poor performance in the Kemaman by-election was because the coalition’s “strong supporters” did not go out to vote.
Then, during a recent Senate sitting, former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker urged the unity government to discontinue the Bumiputera economic congress scheduled for January.
Responding to both leaders, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh challenged Tan to also accept that MCA had lost significant Chinese supporters and cautioned Ti against creating racial issues.
Neow said BN needs to focus on rebuilding the people’s confidence in them before the next general election.
“If we are divided and openly criticise each other, how can the people return to us and trust us to lead and improve this country?” Neow asked.
BN was the country’s longest-ruling coalition but has seen support decline since losing power for the first time in 2018, securing just 30 seats in last November’s general election. - FMT
