Gonzalo Lira was an independent American journalist / blogger who was critical of American involvement and support for the war in Ukraine. Quite naively he travelled to Ukraine (last year) and started broadcasting his independent reports about the war. His stories were very different from the propaganda carried by western mainstream media. And he was arrested by the SBU, the Zelenskiye secret police and thrown into jail.
He received first class Ukrainian hospitality which led to him getting very sick in jail. He was denied medical attention and he died of sickness (breathing difficulty from pulmonary edema?) either yesterday 12th January 2024 or a little earlier. Here is a report:
13 Jan- NEW YORK, Jan 12 Reporter Gonzalo Lira died in Ukraine prison
- Gonzalo Lira, Sr. says his son has died at 55 in a Ukrainian prison
- he was held for "crime of criticizing Zelensky and Biden"
- the US administration "clearly supported his imprisonment and torture"
- Tucker Carlson reports on death of American reporter in Ukraine custody
- Gonzalo Lira imprisoned for criticism of Zelensky and Joe Biden
- blogger detained by SBU (secret police) in Kharkov in May
- He was accused of supporting Russia
- Lira attempted to flee Ukraine to Hungary
- Lira died at a detention facility in Kharkov
- On Saturday Elon Musk addressed Ukrainian President Zelensky
- asking him to explain Lira’s arrest and incarceration
- Elon Musk voiced fear Lira "tortured in Ukrainian prison since July 24"
- last spring, Russia urged global community to demand release of Lira
The US Government did not lift a finger to help or assist one of its own citizens and journalists who was obviously being targeted by the Zelenskiye regime in Ukraine.
Condolences to Gonzalo Lira's father, his sister, family and friends. I used to follow his reports on the war in Ukraine and early last year I did watch his final video from close to the Hungarian border where he said he was trying to leave Ukraine. He did say in that report that he feared being arrested at the border.
