Langkawi water shortage to continue due to drought

PETALING JAYA: The lack of running water in several areas in Langkawi is due to raw water sources running dry, Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada) said.

Bernama quoted a statement from the Kedah water company as saying that Pekan Kuah, Kisap, Kilim, Perana, Bayas, Ulu Melaka, Temoyong, Pantai Cenang, Pantai Tengah and surrounding areas were affected.

“The long and dry drought season, known as El Niño, is currently affecting the northern part of Peninsular Malaysia.

“This has caused the Sungai Melaka water level to drop, indirectly making it difficult for Sada to meet the increasing demand for treated water, especially during holiday and school seasons,” it said.

Sada said production at all water treatment plants in Langkawi was declining and this would continue until the water level in Sungai Melaka returned to normal.

“The increase in the number of leakages in the undersea pipes that supply treated water to Langkawi from the treatment plant in Sungai Baru, Perlis, is also affecting the distribution of treated water to consumers,” Sada said.

The company asked users to be prudent in using water, especially during the prolonged dry season, to ensure a continuous supply of treated water.
