Bersatu's Bukit Gantang MP to lead govt committee on cost of living

The government has appointed opposition “turncoat” Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal to lead a committee to tackle the issue of rising food prices and cost of living.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the Bukit Gantang MP's appointment during an event in Ipoh, Perak earlier today.

In his speech at the event, Anwar said Syed Abu Hussin (above) will lead the National Action Council on Cost of Living (Naccol).

"… I am tasking Syed Abu Hussin to help Naccol. I confirm this so that he can head the cluster, which will increase its efforts so the 'Khidmat Demi Rakyat’ cheapest sales programme can be enhanced, expanded and held more frequently nationwide," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

Naccol comprises 11 ministries and has been tasked to address the rising cost of living faced by the people.

In November, Syed Abu Hussin, who is from Bersatu, “switched” allegiance when he announced his support for Anwar's government but did not quit his party.

In announcing his decision during a session at the Dewan Rakyat, Syed Abu Hussin expressed his readiness to assist the government in addressing the issue of the rising cost of living.

Prior to this, the Bersatu lawmaker had stated his readiness to support Anwar if Putrajaya could allocate enough funding for his constituency.

Stabilising prices

Bernama reported that Syed Abu Hussin was also present at the event when Anwar announced his appointment today.

He told the media that he was ready to accept the responsibility, and said that there are several methods to stabilise the prices of essential items, including rice.

"The earliest measure is rice, followed by other items because rice is now a critical issue.

"So, if I am given the authority to manage this, InsyaAllah, we will show the people and the government that there are methods to stabilise the prices of main food items," he added. - Mkini
