Decide in Parliament if Anwar lost majority - PKR MP

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim says the support of a prime minister should be decided through a confidence vote in Parliament and not via statutory declarations (SDs).

This comes after a blogger claimed the federal opposition managed to gain around 120 statutory declarations to topple the Anwar Ibrahim administration.

Citing Article 43(4) of the Federal Constitution, Hassan said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s support should be decided in the Dewan Rakyat.

Article 43(4) states that the prime minister shall tender the resignation of the cabinet if he ceases to command the confidence of the majority of the members of the Dewan Rakyat.

SDs were first used in February 2020 by Muhyiddin to prove he had enough parliamentarians who supported him to be prime minister.

Muhyiddin used the same approach in November 2022 following the 15th general election when meeting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

However, the Agong instead called for a coalition government, led by Anwar.

Anwar himself passed the motion of confidence in Parliament on Dec 19, 2022, via a voice vote.

Now, about a year later, talks of a movement to topple the government have surfaced with PAS election director Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor reportedly saying yesterday that “enough SDs” had been collected and that the opposition was just biding their time.
