Dr M willing to meet unity minister over controversial remarks

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is ready to meet with National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang over his remarks against Indian Malaysians in an interview with an Indian satellite TV channel.

Through his X account, Mahathir said he hoped Aaron would come to the meet-up.

“Those who talk about multiracialism and criticise me about racial issues should ask why there are race-based parties in the country instead of having a ‘Malaysia’ party.

“Some parties claim they are multiracial but former party leaders call it fake multiracial,” he said.

Aaron yesterday said he was at a loss, disappointed, and confused over Mahathir’s remarks casting aspersion on the loyalty of Indian Malaysians.

He said if Mahathir continued to be stubborn, he wanted to meet the 98-year-old.

‘Not completely loyal’

During the exclusive interview with Thanti TV, Mahathir claimed that Indian Malaysians still identify with their country of origin and are not completely loyal to Malaysia.

He added that a Malaysian should identify as Malay to have the right to call the country their own.

His remarks led to firestorm protests and police reports lodged.

Former Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy said Mahathir lacks the credentials to reprimand Indians for being disloyal when he was primarily responsible for ethnic, religious, and social divisions.

Gerakan has vowed to pressure Perikatan Nasional to condemn the statement and will raise the issue during the coalition’s meeting this week.
