Harapan-BN to discuss Selangor village committee posts, source says

Selangor Umno’s demand for 373 positions in the Village Development and Security Committee throughout the state will be discussed by the top leadership of the two coalitions.

According to a source close to the state government, the Selangor administration has handed the matter over to the Pakatan Harapan-BN leadership.

“We were told that the leadership of Harapan and Umno will discuss the village committee posts.

“We will let the leadership decide,” the source told Malaysiakini.

They added that negotiations will not be rushed and may take some time.

The source was commenting on Selangor Umno chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin’s request for the 373 positions after Selangor Umno decided to return the 20 state local council posts offered by the state Harapan administration.

“We have decided on Friday to return the local council post quota to Harapan out of respect for their influence in urban areas.

“What we are looking at is for Harapan to take care of the urban areas while Umno handles villages,” Megat was quoted saying.

On Jan 16, Malaysiakini reported that the Selangor state government was unable to complete the appointment of councillors involving 12 local authorities for the 2024-2025 session.

According to a source in the state government, Umno’s refusal to accept Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari’s offer has complicated the appointment of 272 new council members.

‘Hope Umno can follow’

Meanwhile, Batu Tiga assemblyperson Danial Al-Rashid Haron Aminar Rashid said negotiations are needed to resolve the allocation of village committee positions.

“Amanah calls for any matter that happens this time to be resolved through negotiations.

“We are referring to the method of dividing seats for political appointees according to the ratio of seats won, which has been used since 2008 through the cooperation of Pakatan Rakyat and has continued until now.

“We hope that Umno can follow the best method used. It is certain that this method is different from the practice commonly used in BN.

“With the proposed suggestion, we can definitely achieve something good in governing the state of Selangor,” he told Malaysiakini. - Mkini
