PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested a man in relation to their probe into the Molotov cocktail attack on Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham’s home on Wednesday.

Perak police chief Yusri Hassan Basri said the man, in his 30s, was arrested in Shah Alam, Selangor, at about 4am today.

The police seized two mobile phones, but said the man does not have a criminal record.

“A court order has been obtained to remand the man for five days until Jan 16 to facilitate the investigation,” Yusri said in a statement.

A fire broke out at Ngeh’s house, damaging the DAP man’s three vehicles, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Yusri previously said a bottle, believed to be a Molotov cocktail, was found at the scene. The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Ngeh said those behind the fire might have been instigated by others, and misled by falsehoods created by PAS and Bersatu over a statement he made on Dec 28.

Ngeh had courted controversy by suggesting that non-Muslim constitutional experts be appointed to the committee studying the conflicts between shariah law and the Federal Constitution.

He later apologised, saying he was unaware the committee had actually been formed by the National Council for Islamic Affairs, chaired by the Sultan of Selangor.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain reportedly said the police were looking to determine whether the attack on Ngeh’s house was linked to his remarks.

“We will know if there is any relation (to the remarks) if we make an arrest,” Razarudin said. - FMT
