Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has never issued a personal order to investigate any individual with the “Tun” title, including family members of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
He also denied that the MACC investigation involving Mahathir’s family was motivated by revenge.
“The coalition government does not interfere with any MACC investigation.
“All investigations are based on the law and all this is not revenge politics as Mahathir claimed,” Fahmi (above) was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
The government spokesperson was speaking to reporters during a press conference after officiating the P-Hailing Rahmah Package Launch Ceremony at the Auditorium Seri Angkasa, Angkasapuri today.
Right to examine if it’s people’s money
Fahmi explained that although the government has never interfered in MACC affairs, the government has the right to examine matters involving people’s money.
Yesterday, Mahathir slammed Anwar’s claims that it was “not easy to investigate a Tun”.
The nonagenarian believed it is harder to investigate those in power, especially the prime minister, deputy prime minister and the MACC chief instead of a “Tun”.
Citing the ongoing MACC investigation on Mirzan, Mahathir also lambasted the government for pressing his eldest son for evidence of the two-time prime minister’s alleged misconduct.
“The government has access to everything. You can investigate that. Anwar said he had boxes of evidence. Well, show them to me, the money he said I have stolen. Where is the evidence?
“Instead, my son (Mirzan) was pressed to give evidence, so I can be charged. My son is being investigated and threatened and I am threatened because I have so-called done something wrong,” Mahathir said.
Fahmi repeated the government’s stance that there was no personal element involved.
“The PM has also said many times there is ‘nothing personal about it’. If there is any matter involving the people’s money, the government has the right to look into the matter,” he said.
He also advised Mahathir to reflect on himself and not make statements that could deliberately scare the people, adding that the former Pejuang chairperson should also not challenge Anwar to hold an election.
“Tun lost his deposit in the Langkawi MP contest in the 2022 election and Anwar won in Tambun.
“So as a statesperson, he must reflect and must leave a pure legacy,” said Fahmi.
