PETALING JAYA: Officials have taken action against a seafood restaurant in Teluk Nipah, Pulau Pangkor, after it was accused of overcharging its customers.

Enforcement officials of the domestic trade and cost of living ministry conducted raids on seafood restaurants in the area yesterday.

“Comparison of prices at the outlet compared to other outlets around the area revealed that the outlet’s prices were indeed higher,” the ministry’s Perak director Kamalludin Ismail was quoted as saying.

The raids were part of a two-day operation beginning yesterday after viral postings about the restaurant were made on TikTok and Facebook on Friday, Bernama reported.

Inspections of eateries around Teluk Nipah, especially the restaurant highlighted in the viral post, showed that the restaurants did not display price tags for raw seafood ingredients, and did not use weighing scales.

“The outlets only placed price tags when inspections by uniformed officers were conducted,” Kamalludin said in a statement.

Consequently, action was taken against the outlet for suspected violation of the Consumer Protection Act.

“The outlet was also served with a notice to confirm product information and a written notice under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act. The business must submit product information within five working days,” he said. - FMT
