An aide to the prime minister has lodged a police report to begin investigations over a movement to overthrow the Anwar Ibrahim administration.
The report was made to end speculation which could cause public anxiety and affect investor confidence, Anwar’s senior political secretary Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin told reporters in Putrajaya today.
He said controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin’s recent claims on statutory declarations were clear proof of the existence of a movement to overthrow the government despite it being a futile action.
"The Dubai Move is clearly an action that not only undermines the parliamentary democratic system but is even futile because the Anti-Party Hopping Act prevents any effort to change the cabinet and government in the middle of the administration (term).
"I believe some MPs including irresponsible opposition leaders, started this movement. Their actions can harm parliamentary democracy, cause anxiety and disrupt public order.
"Attempts to create political instability that could threaten national security must be thwarted," Shamsul (above) said.
He added that another 12 police reports had also been lodged nationwide today to ensure that the police investigate the matter.
Earlier today, the prime minister dismissed PAS election director Muhammad Sanusi Md Noor’s claim that the opposition has sufficient statutory declarations to topple the coalition government.
“Never mind, no need to comment (on the matter). I’m working.
“If it is a big issue, I will answer,” he told reporters at the sidelines of an event in Sepang this morning.
Useless action
Yesterday, Sanusi, who is also Kedah Menteri Besar, said “enough SDs” had been collected and that Perikatan Nasional was just biding their time.
Meanwhile, Shamsul, when asked whether the Madani government was shaken by such a move, explained that such an action would be useless because the country has the Anti-Party Hopping Act.
“I leave it to those who are developing such a perspective. But for the government, of course, we want to end this matter because if not then it will be assumed that the government did not do anything.
“There is talk of this that we look like we are panicking, not doing anything and so on.
“I want to tell those who are irresponsible out there that Malaysia has laws, rules and the Federal Constitution. We have gone through various episodes like this.
“We have put an end to that with the Anti-Party Hopping Act,” he said.
