Sanusi applies to move sedition trial to High Court

The sessions court has allowed Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor’s application to vacate his trial dates on Jan 18 and 19 as he will be overseas on official duties.

PETALING JAYA: Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor, who is facing trial in the Selayang sessions court for sedition over statements he allegedly made against royalty, has applied to move his trial to the High Court, says his lawyer.

Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud said a notice of motion was filed in the Shah Alam High Court yesterday.

He said the application has been fixed for case management on Jan 24.

“There will be difficult questions of law which will emerge during the trial,” the lawyer told FMT.

Awang Armadajaya, a former deputy public prosecutor, said a copy of the legal papers has been served on the prosecution.

Meanwhile, the lawyer confirmed that the Selayang sessions court has allowed Sanusi’s application to adjourn trial dates falling on Thursday and Friday this week, as the menteri besar would be attending to official duties overseas.

Sessions court judge Nor Rajiah Mat Zin had on Oct 4 identified 12 days between Jan 18 and Feb 23 to conduct the trial.

According to the amended charge sheet, the Perikatan Nasional election director faces two charges under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948.

If convicted, he is liable to a fine of up to RM5,000, or a jail term not exceeding three years, or both.

He is alleged to have committed the offences at Simpang Empat in Taman Selayang Mutiara, Gombak, Selangor, on July 11.

The prosecution said that it will call at least 10 witnesses in its attempt to prove a prima facie case. - FMT
