KUCHING: Federal and Sarawak health officials are to meet next week to deliberate further on Sarawak’s request for autonomy on health matters.
Sarawak deputy premier Dr Sim Kui Hian said he had written to federal health minister Dzukefly Ahmad recently to state that “the existing health system is no longer working well”.
He said Sarawak wanted autonomy on health matters to ensure it can offer the best health services to the people.
He said the state needed more health facilities, such as heart centres in Sibu and Miri, due to the size of the state and the time it takes to travel within Sarawak.
Sim said the discussion process on the matter was quite complicated as it has to go through several stages before the outcome can be presented to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg.
“It also involves 43 laws,” said Sim, who is the state minister for public health, housing and local government. - FMT
