The Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) has cleared the air regarding a poster for a Chinese calligraphy competition, which netizens said neglected the use of Bahasa Malaysia.
According to the council’s Corporate, Public Relations and Tourism Department chief Muhamad Hafizzuddin Azhar, the said programme - which among others, features the photo of Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming on the poster, is not organised by MPT.
“The programme is organised by Taiping MP Wong Kah Woh’s service centre and it pertains to a Chinese calligraphy contest.
“If it’s calligraphy, of course, the target group is Chinese,” he told Malaysiakini when contacted.
MPT had earlier shared a promotional poster for the contest, set to be held on Sunday, Jan 28, on its Facebook page. This courted sharp rebuke from netizens as the poster predominantly featured Chinese text.
However, a check by Malaysiakini last night revealed that the initial poster had been replaced with another which features Bahasa Malaysia on top of Chinese text.
Hafizzuddin pointed out that the calligraphy contest, dubbed the “Nga Kor Ming Cup”, is among the events held in conjunction with Taiping's 150th anniversary celebrations.
“We (MPT) are just helping to promote and publicize the programme.”
Taiping’s 150th anniversary celebrations coincide with Visit Perak Year 2024.
A variety of programmes and activities have been lined up from January to December this year.
