Umno agrees to 20 local councillor posts - Selangor exco

The appointment of Selangor’s local councillors is expected to be completed by next week as Umno has agreed with the number of seats allocated to the party.

Selangor executive councillor for local government and tourism Ng Suee Lim said the agreement was reached at a meeting with Umno today.

“The meeting was a fruitful one as we already got the result.

“Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari has already signed the appointment letters for Pakatan Harapan’s side so the swearing-in ceremony will take place either this week or next week,” Ng (above) told Malaysiakini.

Earlier, an internal state government source said Umno had refused to accept Amirudin’s offer.

This resulted in the delay of the appointment of 272 new council members to serve 12 local authorities for the 2024-2025 session.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, Amanah’s Batu Tiga assemblyperson Danial Al Rashid Haron Aminar Rashid said there should be no further delays on the matter.

“For Amanah, we were given about 60 names. Everything is okay from our side because we have been here for many years.

Personally, instead of waiting for everyone, we should start the swearing-in ceremony for those who have submitted names.

“It would be a waste of time to wait for everyone,” he added.

DAP’s Bukit Gasing assemblyperson Rajiv Rishyakaran and Bandar Utama assemblyperson Jamaliah Jamaluddin confirmed that councillors for the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will be sworn in on Thursday.

State seats

PKR has helmed Selangor as part of the Pakatan Rakyat and Harapan governments since 2008.

Harapan and Umno worked together for the first time to compete in the six state elections held in August last year.

In Selangor, Harapan won 32 state seats and retained the state government for the fourth consecutive term, beating the Perikatan Nasional coalition which seized 22 state seats.

BN only won two state seats, Sungai Air Tawar and Dusun Tua.
