PETALING JAYA: MCA president Wee Ka Siong has hit back at DAP vice-chairman Teresa Kok who claimed in an interview that the Barisan Nasional component party is “lost”.
The former transport minister also dismissed Kok’s claim about his “constant open criticism” of DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook, the current transport minister.
In a Facebook post, Wee said he only criticised Loke as the issues Wee raised, including data security concerns about the MyJPJ application, and airfares to Sabah and Sarawak, were of public interest.
Referring to the interview Kok, the Seputeh MP, gave to Mingguan Malaysia in which she was asked about the relationship between MCA and DAP in the federal government, Wee said:
“The question was very simple, and the answer is whether we have a cordial relationship or otherwise. She could have just answered the original question and not gone off topic.”
Constructive criticism for the good of the people
Wee said that when he helmed the transport ministry, the road transport department (JPJ) urged him to launch the MyJPJ application, but he refused as he was not comfortable with its security features that “contained risks of information leaks”.
He said the then JPJ director-general “corrected the information leak” in the MyJPJ system.
On airfares to Sabah and Sarawak, Wee said he was only raising concerns about the high prices on AirAsia’s Superapp platform.
He noted that the High Court had later issued a temporary injunction against AirAsia to stop it from selling tickets for Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Batik Air flights on its Superapp.
“Both constructive criticisms were for the good of the people. What is wrong about what I said?” Wee asked.
“As an MP, I have always spoken up for the people whether inside or outside the Dewan Rakyat. Even if I have to rebuke a ministry about a policy, it is for the good of the people.”
Wee also reminded Kok that he spoke about waiving the merchant discount rate (MDR) for DuitNow QR users “until all banks waived the charge”.
He also said he appealed to the government to waive the sales and service tax on those providing services in traditional and complementary medicine (TCM).
Wee said MCA will continue to provide checks and balances to the government and support beneficial policies.
“YB Teresa and her allies can continue to be ‘silent’, but it is my right and responsibility to speak up.
“Please respect and celebrate differences of opinion and freedom of expression,” he said. - - FMT
