Police release CCTV images of suspects in ATM hacking cases

Two of the Latin American men involved in the recent spate of high-tech robberies at ATM machines across a few states. - September 30, 2014.Police today released several images of individuals suspected to be members of a Latin American syndicate responsible for the hacking and theft of more than RM1 million from ATMs in Johor, Selangor and Malacca over the weekend.

The images were from the close circuit television cameras installed at several ATM kiosks where the crime took place.

Federal Commercial Crime director Datuk Seri Mortadza Nazarene said initial investigations showed that the suspects had opened a panel on top of the ATMs using a common key before inserting a compact disc into the CD-ROM located in the machine to inject a malware known as ulssm.exe.

This is the first time in Malaysia that a virus or a malware has been used to steal money from ATMs.

"After infecting the machine with the malware, the suspects removed the CD and relocked the panel before starting to withdraw money from the machine," said Mortadza.

He said the suspects will wait for instructions from other syndicate members who would also provide them with codes by phone. The codes would then be entered through the normal way using the ATM keypad.

The virus then reboots the ATM system and allows the syndicate to withdraw money multiple times from the targeted machines.

More suspects wanted by the police for the ATM robberies. - September 30, 2014.Mortadza said the suspects would then stuff the ATM card slot with a SIM card or cigarette butts to prevent others from using the machine.

This is believed to be a delay tactic so the tampering would not be immediately detected.

So, far seven cases have been reported involving three banks.

Police have set up a special task force to investigate the cases.

They have also launched a special operation called Ops Albatross to hunt down the suspects and bring them to book.

Sampel air kencing atlet wushu dikhuatiri disimpan hampir 16 jam, kata Khairy

Malaysia perlu mencabar keputusan Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) terhadap atlet wushu Tai Cheau Xuen memandangkan terdapat kesangsian bagaimana sampel air kencing atlet itu dikendalikan, kata Menteri Belia dan Sukan Khairy Jamaluddin.

Katanya, ia membabitkan keraguan terhadap kronologi perjalanan sampel itu yang mungkin berada dalam simpanan selama hampir 16 jam sebelum tiba di Doping Control Command Centre (DCCC).

"Kita meragui bagaimana sampel air kencing atlet itu dikendalikan atau lebih tepatnya, amalan chain of custody (CoC) ke atas sampel tersebut.

"Saya difahamkan sampel air kencing tersebut, berserta empat sampel lain diambil pada pukul 5.06 petang (waktu Korea) 20 September lalu di venue acara wushu dan hanya dibawa keluar dari situ pada pukul 7.15 malam (hari yang sama), untuk dibawa ke DCCC."

Kata Khairy dalam satu kenyataan, dokumen CoC seterusnya mencatatkan yang sampel itu tiba di DCCC pada pukul 11.10 pagi, dengan anggapan ia bertarikh 21 September, memandangkan tiada tarikh dicatatkan pada sampel tersebut.

Kemudian katanya, sampel itu dibawa ke Institut Sains dan Teknologi Korea (KIST) dan tiba di makmal institut berkenaan pada 1.29 petang, sekali lagi dengan anggapan ia bertarikh 21 September, memandangkan tiada tarikh dicatatkan.

"Ketiadaan catatan tarikh ini menimbulkan tanda tanya serta keraguan terhadap kronologi perjalanan sampel berkenaan.

"Jika anggapan kita tentang tarikh dan masa tersebut adalah tepat – berdasarkan maklumat yang ada – ia bermaksud sampel tersebut berada dalam simpanan selama  hampir 16 jam, dari venue wushu ke DCCC.

"Ini adalah sesuatu yang amat pelik dan menimbulkan kesangsian ke atas integriti CoC. Mengapa mengambil masa 16 jam?" soalnya.

Terdahulu hari ini, ketua kontinjen negara Datuk Daniyal Balagopal Abdullah berkata pihaknya akan mengemukakan rayuan berhubung dakwaan Majlis Olimpik Asia (OCA) bahawa Tai gagal ujian doping.

OCA hari ini memutuskan menarik balik pingat emas yang dimenangi Tai kerana beliau didapati gagal ujian dadah.

Menurut kenyataan pihak penganjur, ujian sampel air kencingnya yang dilakukan selepas pertandingan pada 20 September mendapati ia mengandungi Sibutramine iaitu bahan terlarang dalam Senarai Larangan Agensi Anti Doping Sedunia (Wada).

Khairy berkata, sekalipun mengambil kira masa dan jarak di antara venue, DCCC dan KIST, ia masih tidak masuk akal mengapa mengambil masa begitu lama.

"Jelas ia tidak disimpan di venue dan tidak juga dihantar ke KIST dengan segera. Sekiranya penganjur mengemukakan alasan ia disimpan di peti sejuk, tiada sebarang rekod menyatakan sedemikian," katanya.

Malaysia katanya sudah mengemukakan semua persoalan itu kepada panel disiplin temasya itu yang dipengerusi Tayyab Ikram dan menghantar surat kepada badan OCA Antidoping menyuarakan ketidakpuasan hati tentang bagaimana proses CoC dijalankan.

"Lebih menimbulkan persoalan ialah dalam perjumpaan kedua dengan panel tersebut, mereka mengemukakan dokumen CoC berkenaan yang secara jelas dipinda, berbeza dengan butiran yang kita terima secara rasmi sebelum itu.

"Versi dokumen yang dipinda itu tidak pernah dikemukakan kepada pihak kontinjen negara dan ia sesuatu di luar kelaziman, memandangkan kita berhak mendapat maklumat sepenuhnya tentang sampel berkenaan," katanya.

Khairy berkata, Malaysia tiada sebarang sebab mempersoalkan pengambilan sampel berkenaan atau kesahihan analisis oleh KIST tetapi persoalannya adalah tentang kepincangan proses CoC yang tidak dijawab dengan sebaiknya oleh panel itu.

"Dalam kita berjuang secara agresif memerangi penggunaan dadah di kalangan atlet,  kita juga perlu memastikan agar proses CoC dilaksanakan dengan penuh integriti kerana setiap atlet berhak mendapat layanan adil dan saksama.

"Ini juga untuk memastikan tiada pertikaian ataupun kesangsian terhadap proses anti-doping berkenaan."

Better to be prostitute, says blogger of Muslim woman joining DAP

Melati's Facebook page shows her concern for youth activist Ali Abd Jalil, who was released after being in police custody for more than 20 days. - September 30, 2014.A blogger has attacked the actions of a purdah-wearing Malay woman in joining the DAP, saying she should have become a prostitute instead.

The writer, who calls himself "KuntaKinte Malaysia", slammed the woman, who is known as Melati, claiming that her decision to become a DAP member was akin to selling herself and her religion just for the riches offered.

In a posting entitled "Melati, Lebih Baik Jadi Pelacur Dari Sertai DAP”, the writer said the actions of Muslim girls or any Muslim youth in joining the DAP was actually strengthening the party's efforts to weaken the role and position of Islam in the country.

"A prostitute who sells herself would not decay the position of Islam in the country, but those who join the DAP are helping them destroy Islam in Malaysia.

"The reality is, it is more noble to be a prostitute who sells herself for a mouth of rice, than being those in tudung and purdah who 'sell themselves' to the DAP for the riches of the world until it weakens Islam', he said in a website, www.mykmu.net.

Melati, whose real name is Jamila Rahim, is a UniSel graduate and has written a novel titled, "Pelacur Kelas Pertama”.

The 22-year-old's decision to join the DAP shocked many, especially since she dons the purdah.

While he said he would be praying that Melati and other Muslim girls in DAP, including the party's candidate for the Teluk Intan by-election Dyana Sofea Mohd Daud, would return to the right path, KuntaKinte also flayed Johor PAS Youth for its support for Melati.

Sheikh Omar Ali, a Johor PAS Youth member, who is also an assistant to Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong from DAP, had written in a blog calling Melati's decision, the "Melati Move".

He said that her joining the DAP would somewhat serve as an example to young Malaysians who dared to go against the flow.

"It is a signal that the Y-generation do not hold any racist sentiments as a basis for them to be part of a process in building the future of the country to be more fair and democratic," he said.

KuntaKinte claimed that Omar's reaction proved that the involvement of young Muslims in DAP was only for money.

"Omar's statement and justification only confirms the thousand-year-old theory that riches and property are everything in a human world," he added.

He also questioned PAS which, he said, used to be a party that went all out to reject non-Muslim votes.

"It is extraordinary, they who once thought that voting for a non-Muslim as a representative was prohibited, today justifies the involvement of Muslim youth into a party with a majority of non-Muslim leaders who want to weaken Islam in the country," he said.

In an interview with Malaysiakini today, Melati revealed her reasons for joining a party whose detractors never tire of branding as a threat to the position of Malays and Islam.

“If you look at the DAP constitution, it places humanism and human rights as its main thrusts.

“In Islam, humanism is one of the core factors. So DAP is closer to the concept of justice as prescribed by Islam. And Islam is my main principle in life,” she was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini.

Melati stressed that the humanism agenda pushed forth by DAP was crucial in dealing with people of various races and faiths.

She also disagreed with critics who claimed that DAP is a "Chinese, anti-Islam party".

Malaysiakini also reported that previously, Melati was an activist and had worked with soup kitchens around Kuala Lumpur and with orphanages.

The proceeds from her book, Pelacur Kelas Pertama, will go to an orphanage in Teluk Intan, Perak.

Isma blames non-Malays for provocation ahead of leader’s sedition trial

Set to the tune of traditional Malay music, the YouTube video titled Pewaris Bangsa (Heirs of the Race) features several top Isma leaders declaring the supremacy of their race and religion, and lamenting the "interference" of the non-Malays.

Isma vice-president 2 Abdul Rahman Mt Dali said in the video that the non-Malays had "forgotten their promise" and were intervening in the affairs of Malays and Muslims as well as challenging their positions in the country.

"We have no problem with them, they stay here, we have never disturbed them, but now and lately we see that they are interfering, they have forgotten their old promise," he said in an interview in the video.

Isma vice-president 1 Muhammad Fauzi claimed there were attempts to denigrate the Malays as "pendatang (immigrants), just like the other races".

He said Isma members were simply rising up to defend the "true facts that happened in history".

"We want to affirm that this is a Malay Muslim region where Malays and Islam are the two pillars of the country and this cannot be disputed," said Fauzi in the video.

The group's deputy president, Aminuddin Yahaya, denied that their beliefs were racist and insisted they were merely defending their religion and race.

He added they would support their president even if he were imprisoned for sedition.

"God willing, the strength in our president will continue to ignite all Isma members and we shall not stray even one step away from our battle until the end of our lives," he said.

The video, which is almost five minutes long, ends with shots of Abdullah Zaik praying and a message urging the public to appear at the Kajang Sessions Court on October 13 to support Isma and its president as he attends the hearing.

On June 19, Abdullah Zaik was charged under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act 1948 for claiming that the Chinese migrants who had come to Malaya during the British colonial era were "trespassers".

"Who gave them citizenship and wealth to the point that the results of their trespassing has been protected to this day," Abdullah Zaik had said in a statement published on Isma's website on May 6.

He faces a maximum RM5,000 fine or jail up to three years or both for any of the charges laid down in the Act.

Abu Dhabi UNHAPPY if EPF allowed to vote on CIMB-RHB-MBSB merger

The Abu Dhabi government has formally reached out to the Malaysian government, expressing its concern about the Employees Provident Fund’s (EPF) right to vote in the proposed mega merger of RHB Capital Bhd (RHBCap), CIMB Group Holdings Bhd and Malaysia Building Society Bhd (MBSB).

“Sheikh Mansour (Zayed Al Nahyan) has sent a letter to the Malaysian prime minister on this,” a source familiar with the matter told The Edge Financial Daily.

Sheikh Mansour is the deputy prime minister and minister of presidency affairs of Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi’s strategic investment company Aabar Investments PJSC owns a 21.2% stake in RHBCap.

Whether or not the EPF can vote in the mega bank merger has been a hot topic of debate in the industry.

The EPF is keen on voting in any eventual deal to protect its investments.

However, certain Bursa Malaysia listing rules prevent the EPF from being able to vote as it is a substantial shareholder of all three parties. It is the single largest shareholder of RHBCap and MBSB with its 41.5% and 64.6% stakes, respectively, and holds a 14.6% stake in CIMB Group.

RHBCap and MBSB have, at the EPF’s request, written to Bursa to put forward EPF’s request for a waiver from the listing rules.

The Edge Financial Daily reported on August 22, quoting sources, that the proposed merger scheme was for CIMB Group to sell its entire banking business to RHBCap and for the deal to be paid via an issuance of new RHBCap shares.

Under that scenario, the EPF’s vote is crucial because as the buyer of the assets and liabilities of another banking group, RHBCap only needs a 50%-plus-one share approval for the deal compared to the selling party, which would need a 75% vote.

As such, should the EPF abstain from voting, RHBCap’s other substantial shareholder — Aabar — will hold the trump card. With its 21.2% stake in RHBCap, Aabar will hold a 36.2% vote for or against the acquisition of CIMB Group’s assets and liabilities should the EPF abstain from voting.

Aside from the Middle Eastern investor, OSK Holdings Bhd also has a 9.9% stake in RHBCap and would hold an important vote as well.

It is no secret that Aabar could be a stumbling block to any merger, given that it is seeking a high price of RM12 per share for its shares in RHBCap.

It bought the shares in 2011 from sister company Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) for RM10.80 a share. However, sources said Aabar’s total investment cost is closer to RM12 a share as it has to take into account the interest expense to fund its investment. ADCB, owned by the Abu Dhabi government, made a tremendous gain from the stake sale to Aabar as it acquired the shares in 2008 at just RM7.20 apiece. RHB shares, which closed at RM8.87 yesterday, have not crossed the RM10 level in over five years.

In a recent interview with The Edge weekly, EPF chief executive officer Datuk Shahril Ridza Ridzuan pointed out that the fund has substantial stakes in over 100 companies in the Malaysian market, and hence, it is important for it to vote to protect its investments.

“If we cannot have voting rights in these institutions (big banks, plantations companies, etc) and they try to do deals with each other, it is very dangerous for us. [If there is] any merger in the banking sector, we will be cut out if we cannot vote because we own stakes in all the banks — Maybank, AmBank, etc — so what do we do?” he remarked.

In March last year, Aabar, which is 98.25%-owned by Abu Dhabi’s International Petroleum Investment Co, and 1Malaysia Development Bhd inked an RM18 billion strategic partnership to invest, via a 50:50 joint venture, in long-term sustainable economic and social projects.

These include investments in the Tun Razak Exchange and Bandar Malaysia.

It was also agreed, at the time, that Abu Dhabi develop a RM21 billion strategic petroleum reserve facility in Johor with the capacity to store 60 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum for the exclusive use of Abu Dhabi.

To date, however, it is not known how much of these committed funds have actually flowed into the country.

Two months back, The Malaysian Insider reported, quoting sources, that Abu Dhabi, through a special envoy sent to Putrajaya, made it clear that it might not proceed with these investments if the bank merger went through without considering the Middle Eastern nation’s interest. – The Edge Financial Daily

Assalamualaikum warga Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia. Setelah berbulan lamanya berbincang mengenai cermin gelap dengan dihadiri oleh pakar2 hasilnya keputusan baru mengenai cermin gelap tak beza banyak dengan yang sebelumnya. Amat mengecewakan keputusan terbaru ini.

Mengapa Agong Sultan Menteri dan VIP lain dibenarkan bercermin gelap? Atas alasan keselamatan? Golongan2 ni kalau p mana Polis yang dilengkapi senjata setiap kali akan mengiringi Golongan ini kemana saja depa p siap tutup jalan. Adakah peragut beg yang pecah cermin kereta berani pecahkan cermin kereta golongan ni untuk meragut beg tangan? Cermin kereta golongan ini pun cermin kalis peluru jadi takat katok tu takkan pecah.

Tetapi kereta orang awam biasa terdedah pada risiko kerana nampak mana lokasi letak handbag dan barang2 berharga. Cermin kereta awam majoriti bukan kalis peluru. Ingat takat tinted cermin pecah tapi takkan hancur? Pencopek laknat ni ada cara tersendiri depa macamana nak kopak cermin kereta.

Malaysia beriklim tropika jadi dalam ertikata lain PANAS. Jika kebenaran untuk golongan ini bercermin gelap sebab nak bagi depa selesa awat kami orang awam tak perlu selesa. Biaq panas dalam reta saja ka? Bayangkan parking reta kat parking awam yang tidak berbumbung 30 minit pun bahang dalam kereta macam nak sama oven. Jangkamasa panjang boleh merosakkan interior dalaman kereta. Golongan ni takpalah sebab depa beli kereta rasmi guna duit rakyat dan jika depa beli kereta peribadi pun takpa sebab duit depa belambak tak macam kami ni golongan pertengahan dan bawahan.

Kalau golongan ini tau panas dan tak selesa begitu juga kami ni. Kami yang ada anak kecil ni kalau dok reta lama2 depa tak selesa panas sepasai, bahang kepanasan matahari lagi. Silau dek pancaran cahaya matahari. 

Saya minta JPJ tolong semak semula ketelusan cahaya ini. Logikkah kereta nak cermin gelap kena minta kebenaran JPJ sedangkan kereta ni kami beli siap bayaq cukai guna duit kami sendiri. Bukan dapat subsidi dari kerajaan pun. 

Janganlah bersikap golongan tertentu saja yang boleh cermin gelap. Kalau beginilah cara JPJ patutnya golongan seperti Agong Sultan Menteri VIP juga tidak dibenarkan bercermin gelap.

Tu tak kira lain ada setengah pegawai JPJ saya ulang ADA SETENGAH PEGAWAI JPJ yang bercermin gelap. Memang JPJ tidak membenarkan pegawai2 bercermin gelap tetapi realitinya reta depa juga bercermin gelap gila2. Takat keluar notis depa bawa reta lain atau nek motor p reja.

WHY IS PROBE TAKING SO LONG? Cops extend bail of PPS members for another month

The police have extended the bail of 154 Penang voluntary patrol unit (PPS) members, as well as two DAP elected reps over their involvement in the "illegal" organisation.

Bail was extended for another month starting today.

Seri Delima assemblyman R. S. N. Rayer, whose police bail was also extended with Sungai Puyu assemblyman Phee Boon Poh's, said all 157 of them will be reporting to the northeast district police headquarters in batches from today to Thursday.

He said the extension ends on October 29 and the police can only extend the bail up to three times.

"This is the first extension. After that, the police will have to decide whether to charge us or not," he said outside the district police headquarters in Jalan Patani this morning.

Rayer also said they have to wait for the police to inform them of the latest developments in the investigations.

"We are not sure why there is a delay. We just learned that the investigations have not been completed," he added.

Besides Rayer and Phee, 30 other PPS members turned up at the district police headquarters this morning.

It is understood that police bail for Tanjong MP Ng Wei Aik, who was also detained for his involvement in the unit, will be extended later. His bail ends on October 3.

On Merdeka Day last month, the police arrested members in the unit after they took part in a parade organised by the state. All those detained were released on police bail after their statements were recorded.

In the crackdown on the unit, Phee and Rayer were detained for their involvement in it. Phee is the state welfare executive council member and chairman of the PPS, while Rayer is deputy PPS chairman.

Ng, who is the unit's vice-chairman, was arrested three days later.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who was present at the district police headquarters' entrance to show moral support for the group, said the state government will continue to stand by the PPS members as they had served the community well.

"We will stand by them... we ask them to be patient while the police investigates," he said, adding that the state and the PPS's legal team were ready if the case went to court.

"We will fight for justice and truth in court. The PPS was set up by the state according to powers granted to the state."

Lim said the PPS was formed four years ago and encountered no problems. The unit even received cooperation from the police.

He said the state had documents showing this.

"Why is the PPS suddenly a problem now? Is it because it is multiracial and we have the support of all community members?"

He said the entire unit of more than 9,000 members should not be punished or demonised just because a few of them had made mistakes.

"We hope they will not be persecuted because of the Barisan Nasional government's political jealousy.

"The PPS members' contribution to society has been acknowledged and we hope we can bring this to court to defend the people who have done no wrong and give them justice."

Lim said since the incident on Merdeka Day, most PPS members have stood their ground and were eager to return to action. Only a handful of members have stopped serving in the unit.

Police action on PPS came after the unit sparked controversy when two of its members were accused of beating up a social activist at a Hungry Ghost Festival dinner in Farlim on August 17.

All three men, including the social activist, were charged with committing affray at a George Town Magistrate's Court earlier this month, but the damage to PPS had been done.

The alleged “assault” led the Pakatan Rakyat government's detractors to question the legitimacy of the state-funded unit.

Lim has argued that the unit was like the Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK), which did not require registration with the Registrar of Societies. But the authorities have deemed the PPS illegal.

Following the troubles faced by the PPS, the state has since suspended the unit's activities, which included aiding emergency response and community policing.

On a separate matter, Lim welcomed the action by the police to investigate a man who allegedly cheated a group of people of gold bars worth more than RM4 million.

He had highlighted the case and the plight of the 18 victims on Sunday. He said the suspect was formerly an Umno Youth branch and Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS) leader in Penang.

"I welcome state police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi's statement that the police are looking at the case seriously.

"We are glad that the probe is 70% completed and the suspect had been called up. This is a good job by the police and a good development for the victims.

"The victims only want justice and hopefully also regain the RM4.2 million they lost in the gold bar transactions."

The suspect allegedly offered to buy gold bars from the group above the market price in October last year for over RM4.9 million. He issued them post-dated cheques for the bars, but the group could only cash in over RM710,000. –TMI
