Selangor may take Khusrin after all

SHAH ALAM, Jan 24 — Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim today said the Selangor government was now considering allowing Datuk Mohd Khusrin Munawi carry out his official duties as state secretary.

The Selangor mentri besar said this would depend on the success of his administration’s bid in amending the state constitution to empower the state government and Ruler to decide on the appointment of top three senior officers.

Today, Khalid said the state executive council would have a meeting soon to discuss the matter.

“Yes, it could be (that we allow Khusrin to take the oath of secrecy), it is one of the things we are going to discuss. We’ll have a discussion within the exco level following today’s state assembly meeting,” Khalid told reporters today.

When asked whether Khusrin’s relationship with the state government had soured as a result of Selangor’s disagreement over his appointment, Khalid said he remained optimistic over the matter.

“I am sure he (Khusrin) is a professional man who will do his best... the important thing is for us to be able to accommodate, to adapt... Khusrin’s legitimacy will depend on his performance,” Khalid added.

It is understood that the amendments are not likely to be passed today, as the Pakatan Rakyat government is three seats short of the two-thirds majority needed to push the changes through. All 20 Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen have stated that they will not support such the move.

The Selangor government wants to amend the state constitution in a bid to resolve the ongoing impasse over Khusrin’s appointment as the new state secretary, after Khalid insisted his administration had been kept in the dark over the move.

It says the amendments to the Selangor constitution will ensure powers are restored to the state and the Sultan, who shall act on the advice of the mentri besar.

Article 52 Clause 1 of the 1959 Selangor state constitution now states that the Selangor Sultan, upon the recommendation of the “appropriate service commission”, shall appoint individuals holding permanent posts as the state secretary, state legal advisor and state financial officer. - Malaysian Insider
