Gov't unaware of cash for uni students in N-Day

The government is unaware of allegations that cash is being dangled at university students in exchange for their participation at this year's National Day celebration, says Minister in the Prime Minister Department Koh Tsu Koon.

"I am not aware of this. The National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN) is mobilising members of the Jiran Muda who is part of Rukun Tetangga. We give them transportation and food. That's all," he was quoted as saying in a report by The Star today.

Koh clarified that the government was not specifically going to varsities to recruit participants or the celebration.

"There are students among Jiran Muda members but we do not go to schools or universities to get them," he told the daily.

Koh was responding to a report by The Malaysian Insider which claimed that the JPNIN had in an email promised up to RM100 cash reward in addition to free food, transportation and T-shirts for the National Day participants.

The report said JPNIN was looking to mobilise some 1,000 students for the event aged between 18 to 35.

It also specifically noted that it wanted Chinese and Indian students for the event.
