A prominent historian today admitted that the red and white flag displayed by several individuals during last week’s Merdeka eve celebrations is part of Malay history.
“Red and white are historically the colours of the archipelago Malays,” said Malaysian Historical Society executive chairperson Mohd Omar Hashim.
He mentioned historical records of flags of Malay empires like Majapahit and more recent organisations.
Mohd Omar also saw no reason why the flag shouldn’t be displayed.
“From a historical perspective it is okay. But politically, there might be issues.”
However, he refused to comment on whether it is appropriate for opposition leaders to defend the display of the Sang Saka Malaya, saying that he will only speak on historical merits.

Mohd Omar stressed though that while the flag is part of history, we should respect the Jalur Gemilang which has been chosen to symbolise our nation.
However, he agreed that if a new government were to come into power, then they can change the flag as they see fit according to the people’s mandate to them.
He reminded again that as long as the current government stands, then the Jalur Gemilang is our flag and must be accorded the proper treatment.
