Attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali should revisit his decision to close the case on the RM2.6 billion donation given to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, PKR vice-president Shamsul Iskandar said today.
The Bukit Katil MP said this is in light of the United States Department of Justice's (DOJ) lawsuits to seize more than US$1 billion in assets allegedly purchased with money siphoned from 1MDB.
"The AG should revisit his decision on the 1MDB scandal and focus his attention to prosecute all the perpetrators on money laundering criminal offences by virtue of the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2001," he said, after sending a memorandum to the AG's Chambers in Putrajaya this morning.
He said the AG must utilise existing laws like the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act 2002 (Act 621) to seek mutual assistance on the matter with the US.
"The AG should cooperate with all relevant government apparatus such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the DOJ to bring back and return the stolen money to Malaysian people," he said.
Former Batu Kawan Umno vice-chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan, who presented the memorandum with Shamsul and PAS' Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar, said Apandi should step down.
"I urge Apandi to resign immediately because he is not qualified to become the head of the AG's Chambers and he is the most useless (AG) in the history of the AG's Chambers," said Khairuddin.
The DOJ alleged in its filings last week that US$731 million which originated from 1MDB went into the account of an unnamed 'Malaysian Official 1'.
The transactions matched those made to Najib's accounts as revealed by the AG when he cleared Najib in January.
In a statement responding to the DOJ lawsuits, Apandi said there is no evidence of money misappropriated from 1MDB and no criminal charges have been preferred. - Mkini
