The Umno supreme council today took note of the fact that 'Malaysian Official 1' was mentioned in the US Department of Justice’s 1MDB lawsuits, said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
"We noticed that, we noted that and the position has been explained at to the public," Najib told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
The Umno president said this when asked if the party supreme council had talked about Malaysian Official 1 during its meeting earlier in the day.
Malaysian Official 1 was not named in the DOJ's suits, which sought to seize more than US$1 billion in assets allegedly acquired with funds misappropriated from 1MDB.
The DOJ documents described Malaysian Official 1 as a high ranking public servant, who had a position of authority in 1MDB.
It said that Najib's stepson Riza Aziz is a relative of Malaysian Official 1.
The filings claim that of the US$3.5 billion siphoned from 1MDB, US$731 million was allegedly placed in the official's account.
However, attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali said there is no proof that 1MDB funds had been misappropriated.
Najib has denied any wrongdoing in the 1MDB scandal.
He has maintained that such allegations are part of a conspiracy to topple him. - Mkini
