Amanah central committee member Hu Pang Chow has claimed that the owner of a watch shop in Kota Baru, Kelantan, has been issued a summons for displaying 'sexy' posters in the shop.
"He (the owner) was given a summons and he was also given till Aug 1 to remove the posters; otherwise the store will be closed down permanently.
"Because I was in the Kota Baru City Council (MPKB) for five years, I know their (MPKB's) attitude; they will never back down.
"They will go ahead with their decision and they will insist the owner pay the summons or they will refuse to renew his business licence," Hu said when contacted by Malaysiakini today.
He said that he had advised the owner to take legal action against the city council, though he does not know whether his advice was heeded.
One of the posters depicts Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai in a strapped black dress wearing a Longines watch.
The other poster showed a man and a woman sitting close to each other, and the woman is wearing a checkered red-and-white sleeveless dress. They are both displaying Guess watches prominently.
Hu said he would be meeting with the owner soon and would be advising him again to take legal action.
The city council does not have the power to close down the shop, he said, adding that the city council only has the right not to renew the business licence, although it would have to wait till the end of the year to do so.
"Under present law or local government by-law, there is no ruling saying that you cannot put up such a poster. Unless it is a naked one, then it's different.
"But if this poster can be put up all around the country, why not in Kelantan?" Hu asked.
Hu also claimed that such incidents have happened many times and he has always advised the owners to challenge the summons in court.
However, he said that most business owners were scared to go against the government.
He claimed that was why the MPKB is brave enough to issue such summons because it knows the business owners will not want to challenge its action.
Malaysiakini has contacted the city council on this matter and is awaiting its response- Mkini
