Court grants stay in Surendran's sedition trial

The Court of Appeal today granted N Surendran a stay for his sedition charge hearing, pending his appeal to strike out the charge at the appellate court.
The three-member bench led by Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat unanimously granted the stay application made by Surendran's counsel, Ambiga Sreenevasan and Latheefa Koya.
Besides Tengku Maimun, the other judges were Justices Zamani A Rahim and Zakaria Sam.
The Padang Serai MP was charged at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 19, 2014 for his remark that Anwar Ibrahim's Sodomy II charge was a political conspiracy involving Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
He had said this when leaving the Federal Court on Aug 8, 2014.
On June 7 this year, Surendran filed an application to strike out the sedition charge on the grounds that it interferes with his duties as a lawyer.
He said he was alleged to have uttered the seditious statement when he came out of court after representing Anwar at the Federal Court.

"Because it deals with something I allegedly said in my capacity as a lawyer, that is interference of duties of lawyers,” Surendran had said.
But on June 24, the High Court of Kuala Lumpur found the Sedition Act to be constitutional, and that the sedition charges brought against Surendran are still valid.
Surendran filed a notice to appeal the High Court decision on June 27.
Amnesty International has urged the Malaysian authorities to drop the charge against Surendran. - Mkini
