PETALING JAYA: With Lim Guan Eng’s position as party secretary-general hanging in the balance, the DAP’s central leadership meets tomorrow to decide whether to hold party elections, which are due this year.
That decision will indirectly affect Lim’s position as secretary-general. He has served a maximum of three terms and his tenure expires when party elections are called.
A postponement would keep him in office until the next party elections.
An announcement is expected by Tuesday, according to Malaysiakini.
“Of course we will follow our party constitution which (limits) the tenure of secretary-general for three terms. Can you (journalists) wait until tomorrow (for me to comment),” he was quoted as saying.
“My tenure has expired, we need to observe our party constitution. This is not something urgent, we will issue (a statement on party polls) by Tuesday,” he added.
Lim, who is to face trial on two criminal charges of corruption, has been under criticism for not taking leave of absence or stepping down from his government position as chief minister of Penang.
The DAP’s constitution allows an 18-month postponement of central committee elections and there has been speculation of a postponement in view of the next general election being due by mid-2018.
Although Lim would be barred from the secretary-general’s position, he would be free to offer himself for election to other positions.
