Professor fears backlash for Singapore Muslims from 'kafir harbi' row

A lackadaisical attitude to labelling those who might disagree with Islam as kafir harbi could have serious repercussions for Muslims in Singapore, warned a scholar.
International Islamic University Malaysia (UIAM) professor Maszlee Malik said it could result in social chaos for our neighbour down south.
"Are we saying that their government, which is often linked to DAP, is a kafir harbi one?
"Are we saying that Singaporeans live in a kafir harbi state?" Maszlee asked at a forum discussing the controversial term last night.
Similarly the Johorean said, there could be backlash for Muslims in Penang and Selangor, where DAP is part of the state governments.
Kafir harbi are non-Muslims whom Muslims must fight against, with methods that include death.
The term became a hot topic issue after Pahang Mufti Abdul Rahman Osman was quoted as saying that DAP was kafir harbi for opposing PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's hudud bill.
Abdul Rahman has since clarified that he meant that DAP should be opposed with words, not weapons.
Maszlee said those in positions of authority should be wary of the consequences of their words.
"We should be careful with the mentality of simply classifying others as kafir harbi."

The professor said that Muslims should not live in prejudice, and should be fighting prejudice with kindness and dialogue.
He cited examples in western nations where Muslims responded to protests against Muslims by opening the doors of mosques to educate the public.
"When we fight for Islam we often forget the aspects of love and kindness."
He then cited other scholars to stress the importance of dialogue between the different faiths, to ensure peace and stability for all.- Mkini
