KUALA LUMPUR - A Hindu nationalist politician from India has offered close to RM3 million as a reward for the beheading of controversial Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik.
Sadhvi Prachi, who was formerly a leader in India’s right-wing Hindu nationalist group Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), declared the 50 million rupees (RM2.94 million) reward yesterday in her personal capacity.
“I have announced the reward because Zakir Naik is not a religious preacher, but a terrorist,” she was quoted telling Indian daily The Indian Express in a report published today.
She also reportedly urged India to investigate the terror links of all “such preachers working in madrasas” in the country.
On Tuesday, a similar bounty offer of 15 million rupees (RM884,033) was offered by a Muslim group that followed the Shia school of thought in Islam, Hussaini Tigers.
Hussaini Tigers’ president Syed Kalbe Hussain Naqvi reportedly announced the reward on Facebook, declaring that anyone who kills Dr Zakir will receive the cash reward and also rewards in the afterlife.
According to the Hindustan Times, Naqvi claimed that Dr Zakir is a villain and heathen.
“Naik is a ‘kafir’ (heathen). He has insulted the Prophet and radical clerics are defending him saying he has no connection with the terrorists,” he was quoted saying by the Indian daily.
Dr Zakir, who has been banned from Canada and the UK for his controversial sermons, has been making headlines in India and Bangladesh recently after news reports emerged that two of the militants behind the July 1 Dhaka terror attack which left 22 people dead, were followers of the popular televangelist.
On July 7, Dr Zakir admitted in a telephone interview with Indian broadcaster India Today that a video clip of his speech purportedly exhorting “every Muslim to be a terrorist” was not altered, but insisted that a video clip of his purported support for Osama Bin Laden and the al-Qaeda terror group was “doctored”.
Bangladesh said on July 10 that it has decided to ban the airing of Dr Zakir’s Peace TV channel, while India has threatened to take action against cable operators that continue to air Peace TV which had been banned there since 2012.
Malaysia’s Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar recently told Malay Mail Online that he will review Dr Zakir’s sermons and speeches made in India and Bangladesh before deciding whether or not action is required.
