SPAD to suspend company behind ‘runaway bus’

Public transport commission's CEO says it hopes any suspension imposed on Qistna Express will serve as a strict reminder to industry.
Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah
PETALING JAYA: The express bus company whose vehicle rammed into 10 cars along the North-South Highway (PLUS) last Sunday, is facing a one-month suspension.
In a statement, SPAD Chief Executive Officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah said the company in question, Qistna Express, had failed to comply with several mandatory safety requirements, following an audit of the company’s fleet yesterday. Qistna Express has 26 buses in its fleet.
“SPAD is now initiating steps to suspend the company’s licence,” he said, adding that it was, however, subject to the findings by the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research’s (Miros) investigation into the crash.
“The commission takes mandatory safety requirements of express buses seriously and we believe the move to suspend Qistna Express will serve as a strict reminder to the industry to ensure that they adhere to the SPAD Industrial Code of Practice (Icop) at all times as public safety is a foremost priority.”
SPAD also assured the public that it will continue to work together with other enforcement agencies, such as the police and the Road Transport Department, to ensure public transport companies operate only roadworthy vehicles and their drivers observe all traffic and road safety rules.
Last week, two people were injured when an out-of-control bus rammed into 10 cars on the PLUS highway, near the Menora Tunnel.
It was later revealed that there were 63 outstanding summonses for the bus involved in the crash, while the driver has nine.
