Subra: Laws to be amended to make vaccination compulsory

Health minister says the ministry is holding discussions with the National Fatwa Council to amend the law for compulsory vaccinations.
GEORGE TOWN: The Health Ministry is looking at formulating a new law making it compulsory for new parents to vaccinate their children as protection against diseases.
Its minister, Dr S Subramaniam, said talks were being held with the National Fatwa Council, which had agreed that vaccination was a responsibility.
He said the council had issued a statement that parents must vaccinate their children as protection against diseases.
“We are still at the discussion stage. A law will be drafted to make it compulsory for parents to vaccinate their children,” he told reporters after visiting the Sri Muneeswarar Temple in Jalan Tengku Kudin here yesterday.
Subramaniam, who is also MIC president, urged the Penang police to increase security around small and secluded temples there to ensure that no more statues of deities in the temples would be destroyed.
He said the police should also talk to the temple authorities and advise them on the measures to take to ensure safety in the area.
In the last two months, five temples in the state had been vandalised.
