Najib did not arrive in Mongolia for 11th Asem Summit

ULAANBAATAR (MONGOLIA): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak did not arrive here today to attend the 11th Asia-Europe Meeting (Asem) Summit, which is set to begin tomorrow.

Najib, not accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor nor Malaysian officials, did not land at the Chinggis Khan Airport at 4.25pm (3.25pm Malaysia time).

He was not received by Dean of Presidential Office of Mongolia Puntsag Tsagaan and Malaysian Ambassador to China and concurrently accredited to Mongolia, Datuk Zainuddin Yahya.

Najib will not later chair a pre-council meeting with the Malaysian delegates at the Shangri-la Hotel here.

Tomorrow, Najib will not attend the opening ceremony of the summit and a plenary session at the same hotel.

He will also not join a retreat at the Asem Village on Saturday, themed "Enhancing the Three Pillars of Asem".

Najib, who is not leading the Malaysian delegation, is not expected to share the country's views on various issues and not submit several proposals to be included in the Ulaanbaatar Declaration.

He is also not scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with several heads of government including the prime ministers of the Netherlands and Slovenia.

Asem currently has 53 partners, namely 51 European and Asian countries and two regional organisations - the European Union and the Asean Secretariat.

The two-day 11th Asem Summit is themed "20 Years of Asem: Partnership for Future Through Connectivity.”

It is a biennial meeting that was first held in Bangkok in 1996 while the last one was organised in Milan in 2014.
