Two Year Five pupils of Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) Jalan Yahya Awal in Johor Baru will represent the country in the ‘International Exhibition For Young Inventors (IEYI 2016)' competition in Harbin, China, from Friday until July 20.
J Kaviraj, 11, and S Abirrami, 11, who will be accompanied by two teachers, M Logeswari and M Sevagamy, will highlight the invention ‘Nano Mosquito Repellent Pouch’, a mosquito repellent based on six herbs to avoid mosquito bites.
Johor MIC chairperson M Asojan said the herbs comprising marigold, lavender, lemongrass, rosemary, bee balm and Thai basil which are processed into powder form and about 20 grammes put into nano fabric.
Asojan said the herb powder in the nano fabric will then have to be worn on the wrist like a watch and it will emit scents that can prevent mosquitoes from biting for a period of three hours.
“After three hours, the nano powder in the fabric should be ironed again to reproduce the scent,” he told reporters after presenting a contribution by Johor MIC to meet part of the expenses of the pupils and teachers in China, at the school today.
The rest of the expenses will be borne by the school and the parent-teacher association, he said, adding that the research and development of the project took eight months, at a cost of RM20,000 including cultivating the herbal plants at the school.
