AGC rejects call to review charges, asserts independence

Attorney-General Idrus Harun has rejected opposition chief Hamzah Zainudin’s call for the prosecution to review all criminal charges against Perikatan Nasional leaders following the acquittal of Muhyiddin Yassin yesterday.

In a statement, he said there was no basis or sound reason for the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to review the cases that have been brought before the justice system.

Idrus (above, left) refuted allegations that the department had acted under political influence or pressure and stressed that the AGC is an independent and professional body.

“The AGC hereby stresses that every decision to charge a suspect is made after thoroughly examining and considering all evidence presented by the relevant law enforcement agencies, according to the relevant laws.

“There is no political influence or pressure involved in (AGC’s decision) to initiate prosecution. The AGC has always acted independently and is professional and we follow all procedures that are in place when pressing charges against any individual,” he said.

The AGC, Idrus stressed, takes seriously statements that can taint the department’s credibility and urges all parties to refrain from suggesting that they have been compromised.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court yesterday quashed four power abuse charges against former prime minister Muhyiddin, who is also PN chairperson.

Following this, Hamzah, who is PN secretary-general, issued a statement urging the AGC to review all criminal cases brought against the coalition’s leaders.

Commenting on the Muhyiddin case, Idris reiterated in his statement that the High Court only quashed four abuse of power charges as per Muhyiddin’s striking-out application.

“Following this, an appeal notice has been filed to challenge the decision while three other charges (against Muhyiddin) under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act still stand,” the AG added. - Mkini
