Gambling kickbacks: Director out on bail, company says

RGB International Bhd, which is being probed for allegedly providing election funding using gambling kickbacks, has confirmed one of its top officials is out on bail and cooperating with MACC.

“The Board of Directors of RGBI wishes to further clarify that RGBI’s independent non-executive director Norazman Hamidun was not arrested by the MACC.

“RGBI’s managing director Chuah Kim Seah is currently on bail and giving his full cooperation with the investigation and the company wishes to highlight that the investigation had been largely focused on his private business related to slot clubs.

“RGB’s involvement in this investigation is solely related to the sales of machines to Malaysia’s slot clubs,” the company said in a statement on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) yesterday.

On Monday, RGBI denied being involved in any form of election funding using gambling kickbacks, which is now the subject of a MACC probe.

In doing so, the company said its wholly owned subsidiary RGB Sdn Bhd only does an outright sale of gaming machines and their accessories, and has no involvement or ownership in Malaysia’s slots clubs.

“The company wishes to state that it had not and will not condone any forms of ‘political funding’,” it said.

The company further stressed that its directors have no links to any politicians and that they are fully cooperating with MACC investigation.

It was reported yesterday that an MACC probe allegedly found evidence suggesting that gambling funds were used to pay for at least three election campaigns dating back to 2018.

MACC reportedly discovered that between RM6-7 million in kickbacks were given by gambling companies to several high-profile individuals, including politicians, in exchange for the businesses being issued licenses to operate slot machines.

At least 14 people have been caught in the graftbuster’s dragnet thus far. - Mkini
