STATE POLLS | Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin claims the corruption trial verdict of Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi supposedly announced last week was postponed by the government due to the state elections.
Speaking at a ceramah in Taman Medan, Petaling Jaya last night, the Larut MP alleged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was behind the purported postponement because he feared losing the polls.
"He (Anwar) had been saying that he would fight tooth and nail against corruption and ensure corruptors will be jailed.
"But when it comes to the time for the case verdict, the court postponed. We want to tell you that the decision (on Zahid's case) was supposed to be announced last week, but it was postponed.
"He was afraid that if the verdict sees the deputy prime minister being found guilty and sent to jail, Umno members will be upset and he will lose the elections and his government would collapse.
"And if the court finds (Zahid) not guilty, the rakyat will be upset instead and (also) cause his government to collapse as well," Hamzah told the crowd of about 100 attendees.
The Bersatu senior leader was campaigning for PN candidate Dr Afif Bahardin, who is contesting the Taman Medan state seat.
It is believed that Hamzah was referring to the postponement of Zahid's trial linked to Yayasan Akalbudi due to the deputy prime minister having to attend a cabinet meeting last week.
However, it is not the trial's verdict as Hamzah had claimed, as the case is still in the defence stage at the Kuala Lumpur High Court and is yet to be concluded.
Zahid is facing 47 charges, namely 12 criminal breach of trust, eight corruption, and 27 money laundering charges involving tens of millions of ringgit belonging to the foundation. - Mkini
