Fact-check: Video of Takiyuddin denouncing Sanusi is misconstrued

STATE POLLS | A video of a speech by PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan seemingly denouncing Kedah caretaker menteri besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor is going viral.

In the speech, Takiyuddin apparently said that PAS had never approved for Sanusi to contest any seat in Kedah.

While the words uttered are real, checks by Malaysiakini found the video had been edited in a way that Takiyuddin's (above) remarks are taken out of context.

In the viral video, Takiyuddin's remarks are as follows:

"Secondly, Sanusi - the Kedah menteri besar - who in the party is the election director.

"I am the party secretary-general, just like how Hamzah (Zainuddin) is in Bersatu.

"I want to confirm that PAS has never at any point recognised him or given way to him to contest in any state seat in Kedah."

The bottom half of the video showed an excerpt from the cartoon South Park in which a character was literally thrown under a bus.

Checks by Malaysiakini found that Takiyuddin's remarks were made at a ceramah in Ayer Hangat, Langkawi on Sunday.

Complete version of the remarks

A more complete version of the PAS secretary-general's remarks - taken from a different angle - showed that he was actually talking about Langkawi PAS deputy youth chief Safwan Hanif Shafie - who is contesting as an independent in the Ayer Hangat state seat.

Takiyuddin said that Safwan claimed to have received Sanusi's blessings to contest in Ayer Hangat, which the PAS secretary-general dismissed.

He then utters the remarks in the viral video, to drive the message home that Safwan was not endorsed by PAS.

Safwan was sacked from PAS after contesting as an independent candidate.

Also sacked was Langkawi PAS deputy chief Mazlan Ahmad who is contesting as an independent in Kuah.
