PULAI BY-ELECTION | Pakatan Harapan candidate Suhaizan Kaiat has credited Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi for his assistance in engaging Umno grassroots to support non-BN candidates.
Suhaizan, who earlier met with Umno members under the Sungai Danga polling district - one of 40 polling districts in Pulai - said Onn's support was key to easing any unhappiness among BN's grassroots.
"Thank you for the support and explanations needed by the (Umno) branches.
"I believe his explanation was well received to deflect a perception (in Umno) that there was no need to support any other candidate aside from BN's.
"YB (Onn) explained the need, the rationale for why support (from Umno) is needed to foster stability and unity between BN and Harapan," said the Johor Amanah vice-chief.
Onn, who accompanied the Harapan candidate on day two of campaigning, credited Suhaizan for his contributions to Johor as a one-term appointed state assembly speaker from 2018 until the state election last year.
"I see he also has a good track record in helping the people… I'm confident if he is given the chance, he will serve the people of Pulai well and continue Salahuddin Ayub's legacy," Onn said.
Suhaizan has met with Umno members from three other polling districts and he said Johor Umno deputy chief Ahmad Maslan will join him later for campaigning.
He noted that overall, Umno grassroots were open to accepting new politics led by party top leaders, together with Harapan and others in government.
"I'm confident if we continue with these engagements, we will get a good impact among the 18,000 Pulai Umno members," he added.
Umno grassroots dissatisfaction
Purported unhappiness among Pulai Umno grassroots was highlighted prior to official nominations yesterday after the discovery of a banner at an unidentified location that allegedly stated, "Kami Cawangan-Cawangan Umno Bahagian Pulai Menolak Calon Pakatan Harapan” (We at Pulai Umno divisions reject Harapan candidate).
Pulai Umno chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed, who also joined Suhaizan and Onn today, initially dismissed the banner as a "dirty tactic" by the opposition.
However, the former Pulai MP last night said he would be meeting with the branch leaders under his division to convince them to support Suhaizan's campaign. - Mkini
