Holiday on Aug 14 if Harapan-BN wins Selangor polls: Amirudin

STATE POLLS | Selangor caretaker menteri besar Amirudin Shari has pledged to declare Aug 14 (Monday) a cuti peristiwa (occasional holiday) if Pakatan Harapan-BN wins the state election tomorrow.

"The state polls on Aug 12 is an important date in the history of Selangor. You (Selangor voters) will decide the state's future for the next five years.

"You have to choose between a coalition that will continue development and excellence in the state, and a coalition that only wants to use this election to trigger political instability, and has no ideas or plans to develop the state," he said in a special address on the eve of the state polls today.

The address was broadcast live on Astro Awani's YouTube channel and Amirudin's Facebook page.

Elaborating, Amirudin urged voters to put aside their emotions and ego when casting their ballots tomorrow.

"Don't even be swayed by hatred. This is not a zero-sum game. Let's not sow the seeds of hatred and revenge because it's election season.

"I respect the people's choice, as it is everyone's right as citizens. All are Malaysians, and no one is a second-class citizen," he said, assuring that no one will be left behind under his administration.

Continuity plea

Citing Selangor's historical development, Amirudin pleaded for continuity.

He touched on the Covid-19 pandemic and recalled "how badly" the PN government had failed in managing the crisis, to the extent that Selangor continuously topped the list of worst-hit states.

"I'm forced to look back at this traumatic episode, and one thing I have learnt is no matter how big the challenge was, how strongly Selangorians braved the pandemic.

"The grit shown by the people of this state has enabled them to brave the hurdles the pandemic threw in their way.

"The same goes for how more than 130,000 families affected by the devastating floods in December 2021 quickly rose to rebuild their lives. Although some are still affected, generally, Selangorians recovered quicker than their counterparts in other states."

Amirudin stressed that his administration will fulfil all the pledges promised for the state and its people in the next five years should they be given another term to govern. - Mkini
