PULAI BY-ELECTION | BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has laughed off Perikatan Nasional's election director Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor's warning that Umno will be "buried" in the two Johor by-elections.
"Ask him why he said that. I have no right to dispute someone's madness," a cheerful Zahid told reporters outside Dewan Jubli Intan Sultan Ibrahim in Johor Bahru today.
He was asked to comment on Sanusi's remarks yesterday that Johor is no longer a BN stronghold and that PN could trounce its opponents in Pulai as well as Simpang Jeram.
Utusan Malaysia quoted Sanusi as saying that the time has come for a wave of change, purportedly driven by the rejection of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to reverse Umno's fate in Johor.
Zahid, together with BN, Harapan leaders and supporters earlier accompanied Harapan's candidate for Pulai, Suhaizan Kaiat, to officially submit his candidacy.
Zahid said the support shown during nominations showed compatibility between parties in government today, not only BN components but also Harapan and GRS.
"The compatibility is at a higher level among national and state leaders. But we have to admit that the grassroots may need more time.
"In these two weeks of campaigning, I hope our (BN) machinery can work together with those from Harapan," said Zahid.
Meanwhile, Suhaizan, when met by reporters after the official candidates’ announcement, said his work in Pulai started as political secretary to the late Salahuddin Ayub, after the incumbent Pulai MP was appointed as domestic trade and cost of living minister.
"Part of his work (as MP) at the service centre was handed over to (me as) his political secretary.
"So, in that sense, I think we can assemble a stronger machinery," he said.
Suhaizan is up against PN's Zulkifli Jaafar and independent candidate Samsudin Mohd Fauzi.
