PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has responded to a mufti’s remarks over his “man-made” party, saying that there are human inventions that must be used to uphold religion.
Penang Mufti Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor argued last week that the concept of an Islamic party is "man-made" so Muslims are not compelled to give their support.
Hadi (above) used the analogy of air travel to Mecca to retort the mufti’s claim.
"There are man-made inventions that must be used for religious practice. Like an aeroplane invented by humans, that can be used to perform haj in Mecca.
"We must take an aeroplane to Mecca, that's what people do, they don't walk," said Hadi during a press conference at the Pulai PAS operations centre today.
"(Islamist) party is a human invention but used to uphold race and religion," he added.
Wan Salim had said that Muslims will not sin, or worse, lose their faith if they choose to support any other political party aside from an Islamist one.
Berita Harian quoted Wan Salim as saying that being "obsessed" - in this case, with a political party - often led to a person wrongfully equating man-made concepts with God's creations.
At the time, Wan Salim's explanation followed PAS menteri besar Nassuruddin Daud's remarks against two opposition assemblypersons in Kelantan as people "who opposed the Islamic struggle".
Hadi earlier attended a 'Dialog Rakyat' with Pulai voters, hosted by the local PAS division as part of Perikatan Nasional candidate Zulkifli Jaafar's campaign trail.
Also present in support were Bersatu vice-president Mohd Radzi Md Jidin. - Mkini
