KOTA BARU: Less than 24 hours after a huge tree fell on a car in Kok Lanas and killed a couple and their five-year-old daughter, the state government has ordered the Ketereh District Council to take immediate action to cut down all big trees in the area.
Ketereh member of parliament Datuk Khir Mohd Nor said he had ordered the operation to start tomorrow as he does not want any more loss of life.
"Today, I had an urgent meeting with Ketereh District Council secretary Azman Ghazali to discuss the issue.
"I ordered him to take immediate action by cutting down all the big, old and useless trees in Ketereh areas including along the Kok Lanas route.
"We do not want a repeat of the incident in which a couple and their young daughter were killed last night," he told reporters when met at Kampung Badak where the three were buried today.
Khir said he was informed by Azman that the latter would appoint few contractors for the felling of trees.
"The Ketereh District Council secretary has told me that has engaged with the contractors on their scope of duties and they will began their work early in the morning," he said.
Meanwhile, the victims of the accident Nik Amirah Ab Rahman,40, her husband Nik Mohd Zulmi Ramli, 44, and their daughter Nik Aishah Azzahra were laid to rest in a single grave at a cemetery here this evening.
About 200 relatives and friends attended the burial at about 6.45pm.
The family of three were killed when the were travelling by car in Kok Lanas. The couple's two other children who were also in the same car escaped with minor injuries.
Another car behind the victim's vehicle was also hit by the tree but all five occupants of the car - a couple and their three children - escaped unhurt. - NST
