KOTA BARU: Pas's top leaders are expected to meet sultan of Terengganu Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah today to propose a candidate for the menteri besar post.

Pas vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said this would allow for the new state leadership to be formed soon.

"It is not nice for me to comment on the menteri besar's candidate because Pas will only meet the ruler (today) to bring the (menteri besar's) candidate's name and get the ruler's consent," he told reporters after attending Pas central committee meeting at the Kelantan Menteri Besar's official residence at JKR 10, here last night.

Also present were Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan.

He said that Takiyuddin and Hadi would bring the letter with the names of the menteri besar candidate to Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin to get his approval for menteri besar candidate.

Samsuri recently said the swearing-in ceremony for the menteri besar will proceed once they secure the sultan's approval.

He added the process of forming a state government, including state executive council members is expected to be completed within a week.

On Saturday, Perikatan Nasional (PN) made a clean sweep of all 32 state seats in the Terengganu state election, leaving the state assembly without a single opposition member for the very first time in its history.

Samsuri defended the Ru Rendang seat with a 17,286-vote majority, beating Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Suhaimi Sulaiman, who only managed to secure 3,641 votes.

Two other former menteris besars from Barisan Nasional, however, were not so lucky.

Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Said, who is Terengganu BN chairman, lost to state Bersatu chairman Datuk Razali Idris in Kijal, while Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman lost to Bersatu's Khazan Che Mat in Seberang Takir.

When commenting on PN's big win in Terengganu, Hadi said the victory would give the state coalition the strength to govern Terengganu and solve many outstanding issues. - NST
