PETALING JAYA: A former PKR MP has accused Pakatan Harapan of exploiting the alleged dispute between Penang PAS and Gerakan president Dominic Lau “in their favour”.
Zuraida Kamaruddin, who recently said she was considering joining Gerakan, said that the incident – which saw Lau barred from entering a PAS ceramah – was not exactly what had transpired as “depicted in the media”.
“I was there at the ceramah and I think there was a misunderstanding.
“Pakatan Harapan has interpreted this issue in their favour,” she told reporters at a press conference today.
It had been recently reported that Lau had been chased away from a PAS ceramah, with a leader from the Islamic party telling the former to “go away”.
Lau has denied that he was turned away, insisting that he turned up at the venue to meet PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang. Hadi however turned up late, and Lau said he had to leave for another meeting.
However, this morning, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan apologised to Lau on behalf of his party, saying he should have been welcomed to the event and treated as a guest, in accordance with Islamic principles.
When asked about reports that she was keen to join Gerakan, Zuraida said the other two Perikatan Nasional components were predominantly Malay parties.
“So, I don’t think they need another Malay like me.”
She went on to describe herself as a “PN activist”.
On Wednesday, Zuraida was reported as saying that she wanted a platform that would promote multiculturalism and there was a possibility she would join Gerakan.
Zuraida was sacked from PKR in 2020, following her role in the “Sheraton Move”, a gathering that led to the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government.
She then joined Bersatu before quitting in May 2022 to join Parti Bangsa Malaysia, only to be sacked in December the same year.
In April this year, it was claimed that the former minister had applied to rejoin Bersatu. Zuraida, however, denied the allegation. - FMT
