STATE POLLS | Perikatan Nasional (PN) has vowed to review the long-stalled Penang Transport Masterplan (PTMP) and implement an autonomous rail rapid transport system.
This was part of the PN's manifesto for Penang that was announced today by the coalition's deputy chairperson Dominic Lau.
The PTMP was initiated during the Lim Guan Eng chief ministership and was finally put in motion during the Chow Kon Yeow administration.
However, by 2020, the Muhyiddin Yassin federal administration had cut funding for the project, forcing the state government to find other means to finance the RM46 billion bill.
The project involved two highways, one light rail transit (LRT) project, and one island reclamation project.
In 2018, the Penang government said it was considering the autonomous rail rapid transport system - a trackless train system - but did not commit to it.
Cash handouts
Lau did not elaborate on other promises during his speech.
PN's manifesto for Penang included various cash handouts such as:
RM1,000 for "qualified" e-hailing and taxi drivers
RM1,500 for funeral costs
RM1,200 for new students who sign up for undergraduate degrees
RM500 for students who sign up for Sixth Form or matriculation
RM250 monthly allowance for trishaw riders
Meanwhile, PN promised to set up a smartphone application that will allow voters to "monitor" the performance of their lawmakers.
One million trees
On housing, PN promised an RM100,000 and below home ownership scheme for "qualified" individuals.
On the environment, PN promised to plant one million trees.
Lau said a Penang PN government will ensure that policies are "rakyat-centric" and that its promises are not populist.
"We need to put an end to the DAP regime in this state. The competition between the 'royalty members" in DAP does not benefit the people of Penang.
"It is time for there to be a better government," he said. - Mkini
