Selangor Umno chief jibes PAS giving up Malay seat to Gerakan

Selangor Umno chief Megat Zulkarnain Omardin today chided Perikatan Nasional (PN) over its claim that BN’s cooperation with Pakatan Harapan will cause Malays and Islam to be oppressed.

Instead, he said the six state elections has shown the opposite where PAS surrendered its Malay-majority seat to Gerakan.

According to Megat (above), PN had been playing up dirty tactics in their attempt to woo votes from Umno supporters by fear-mongering about the Harapan-BN coalition government.

“But this is not true. On the contrary, they were the ones who had to give up their Malay-majority seat to Gerakan. We know what happened in Bayan Lepas.

“In Selangor, DAP was the one who made way to Umno at Dusun Tua, which is a seat that it won in the 2018 general election.

“What they (Perikatan Nasional) accused us has now happened to themselves,” Megat told reporters when met at Taman Bolton in Gombak, Selangor, earlier this evening.

Megat is BN’s candidate for the Gombak Setia state seat in Selangor.

Megat was referring to a political kerfuffle between PAS and Gerakan over the Bayan Lepas state seat in Penang, which saw Gerakan president Dominic Lau allegedly snubbed by local PAS machinery during a ceramah yesterday.

In the 2018 state elections for Penang, Bayan Lepas had 26,570 eligible voters where 65 percent were Malays, Chinese (30 percent), and Indians (five percent).

On the alleged snub, the Umno leader criticised PAS over its alleged rude behaviour against an ally.

While he does not support Gerakan, Megat said it was uncalled for for PAS to humiliate Lau publicly.

“This is a party that says it fights for Islam, they humiliate a guest in public.

“Surely this shows there is trouble between them, while this does not happen between parties that support the unity government.”

Noh’s ‘family interest’

Meanwhile, on a related matter, Megat also called Umno supporters in the state not to be influenced by Noh Omar, a former Selangor Umno chief who is now campaigning for PN.

He claimed Noh is only working for PN in return for his daughter being fielded as a candidate in the Selangor state polls.

“His daughter does not even hold any position in the party (Bersatu).

“Is there no other leader in Permatang who can be a candidate there?

“This shows that what Noh is doing today is just for his family’s interest. So to all Umno members and all Malays and Muslims, do not be fooled by this dirty politics,” he said.

Megat was referring to Nur Syazwani Noh, who is contesting the Permatang state seat under the Tanjong Karang parliamentary constituency that Noh was once MP of. - Mkini
